Series Pro Oriente
The present book by multiple authors offers research within a range of various attitudes toward the enigmatic priest-king Melchizedek, a figure that has inspired diverse religious interpretations since Antiquity. Some of the researched texts were composed before the conclusion of the Jewish biblical canon, though most of them date back to 4th century BC to 4–5th century AD.
The authors of this volume discuss the Melchizedekian motives through the history of their interpretation, posing questions about the historical, social, religious, and spiritual reasons that brought the respective interpreters to create or transform the Melchizedek image in contrast to previous traditions, or in difference from others of their contemporaries.
