The present anthology enables the Czech reader to gain access to treasures of Armenian medieval literature from a span of eight centuries. It includes selected passages from Agathangelos' "The history of the Armenians", which is devoted to the adoption of Christianity and its spread in the beginning of the 4th century; part of the theological treatise "Refutation of the sects" by Eznik of Kołb – an apologetic work dealing with Greek philosophy, marcionism, and the pagan and Persian religions; part of Ełišē's "On Vardan and the Armenian war", covering the war of the Armenians against the Persians, who attempted to eradicate Christianity from Armenia in the years 449–451 and impose Zoroastrianism as state religion; as well as others. The volume also reproduces the translations made by Bohumil Bareš (1906–1982) in his anthology of the oldest extant Armenian literature under the name "Staré arménské pověsti" (Praha 1958).
