Justinián
Život a vláda východořímského císaře
Author: Mischa Meier
Translated by Vlastimil Drbal from the original publication “Justinian. Herrschaft, Reich und Religion”, C. H. Beck, Munich 2004.
One of the significant changes that took place in late antiquity is the move of the capital city from Rome to newly-founded Constantinople, which for a thousand years remained the centre of the Eastern Roman – or Byzantine – Empire. Its most distinguished ruler was undoubtedly Emperor Justinian I (527–565), the subject of the present monograph by the German historian M. Meier. In its Czech translation, this book is the first to deal with Justinian’s time in any detail – despite the fact that the wars against the Vandals, Goths and Persians, the codification of Roman Law, the revolt of Nika!, and also the artistic activity under Justinian’s governance – rendered all the more immediate by the illustrated plates included in the volume – constitute a particularly significant period in history, marking the end of antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages.
