Konstantinopol

Dějiny a archeologie

Author: Peter Schreiner
Translated by Vlastimil Drbal from the original publication “Konstantinopel. Geschichte und Archäologie”, C. H. Beck, Munich 2007.

The book “Constantinople: History and Archeology” deals with the history of the capital city of the Byzantine empire, from the time of its foundation by the Emperor Constantine the Great in the fourth century, up to its fall to the Turks in 1453.  Although it might seem as if the history of Constantinople may have been well covered by previous works, in fact the opposite is the case: the book translated is unique in world byzantological literature. In addition, it is the very first publication in the Czech language on the history of this city, which for many centuries was the political and cultural centre of the late antique and medieval world.
